One of the things that people can do to help in the greening of the environment is to lower their home energy consumption. By doing such, they reduce the amount of energy needed to be produced by the power plants thereby reducing its emission. If I may point out, our homes also emit heat and contribute to global warming. One good way to reduce our household’s emission is by using low energy consumption bulbs. These bulbs use less energy and emit lesser heat thereby generating us direct savings from both light consumption and lessened use of air-conditioning.
During the holidays, people tend to use a variety of Christmas Lights, most of which are lighted for the entire duration of the Christmas season. A good way to save on both costs and emission would be to use LED Christmas Lights (which consumes lesser energy). Led Christmas lights are expected to burn for 200,000 hours compared to the 5,000 hours rating of the ordinary Christmas lights.
But of course, the best energy saving measure that people can implement is discipline. Bulbs that are not needed should be switched off, computers not being used should not be left on standby mode but turned off instead, etc. Discipline combined with the right equipment should work well for all of us.
